There comes a time in the life of every cockatoo owner when they are thinking about breeding their cockatiels. And each owner has his own reason why he wants to breed, but in reality that is not what really matters. What really matters is whether that cockatiel owner has all the resources of time, knowledge and will to raise his cockatiel so that everything goes smoothly.

In addition, it is also vitally important to observe your own cockatiels and find out if you have the right bird to breed. For some owners, this may be the most difficult question to answer, but it is nonetheless the most important thing to answer.

You need to answer this question primarily because breeding two birds that are not acceptable breeding candidates could cause serious harm to your cockatoo chicks. Some might say they’re not going to sell those babies anyway, but that’s not the point. What happens is that some mutations can be really harmful to the life and health of baby cockatoos.

But then again, what are those mysterious desirable characteristics? Size (the bigger the better), the ability to speak, adaptability in stressful situations, rare mutations are just a few to mention. What I always recommend doing before you breed your cockatiel is check with show standard books to see if your cockatiel has the desirable characteristics to be a great candidate for breeding.

But even though you may have a good breeding candidate, that doesn’t mean all the lights are green. You should sit down and think about whether you yourself have the right conditions for breeding cockatoos. Do you have the right amount of knowledge? Will you have enough patience and time? Won’t this interfere with your work or other responsibilities? Will you know what to do if something goes wrong? Will there be a quiet place in your house where you can put your cockatiels to enjoy some peace and quiet? And that’s just a small part of the things you should consider before breeding your cockatiels.

Breeding cockatiels is serious business and I ask you to think and consider if you really want and have the right resources to do it. This is not something that can be decided in a second. You have to weigh all those pros and cons and see if this is really what you want.
