They say that the kitchen is the heart of the home and when it comes to remodeling a kitchen it can cost a lot of money. Some people will do an expensive renovation that leaves them without a kitchen for weeks for a big payoff in the end, but what if you just can’t afford a major remodel?

Fortunately, there are minor things you can do that will spruce up that kitchen and bring it into the current decade. People can usually tell the age of their home by what’s on the walls. If your kitchen is full of wallpaper and/or wallpaper border, it may be time for a makeover. Paint those walls and get creative, with that old fashioned wallpaper, the difference will be amazing!

Change those kitchen cabinets. Restoring just the cabinets can refresh an entire space. Yes, it takes a bit of time, but it’s a lot cheaper than a complete renovation and best of all, you can do the job yourself.

If you can’t change the cabinets, a minor solution is to change the cabinet hardware. There are literally thousands of pulls and knobs to choose from that will bring that outdated kitchen back to where it belongs. Be sure to measure the holes in the old hardware, though, so you can match them up with the new ones or make sure the new ones cover them.

A new faucet is a great idea to spruce up a kitchen. Get one with a vegetable sprayer and voila! They also come in all sorts of colors and designs that will leave you wondering why you didn’t change it sooner.

If you hate your countertops and can’t afford to buy a new one, there’s always the option of having someone come put new boards on top of your old ones, but if that’s not an option, there’s specialty paint you can buy just for countertops. Add a splash of color and watch the kitchen open up!

How about a new fan or lighting fixture? The outdated have to go, and there are so many new and fabulous styles that finding a new one will be an easy and fun experience. You don’t even need to be a skilled electrician to install that new fan or light, they’re easy to do.
