Although often referred to as a pocket piano, the melodica is actually a wind instrument. However, the reference to a piano comes from the fact that its body features a small keyboard. The small keyboard is responsible for playing single and multiple chords and notes in two or three octaves. As it is very small, it can also easily fit inside small bags and pockets.

How to play melodic melodies

When it comes to learning to play the melodica, there are two main concepts to remember: breath control and technique. Here are some tips for you to keep in mind as you play:

-For softer sounds, simply blow normally into the mouthpiece.
-For heavier sounds, use the plate attachment and then blow air like you would a whistle. Just blow softer or harder depending on the sound you want to achieve.
-For a tremolo sound, quickly vary your breathing pattern and change the volume.
-For a choppy sound, short, precise bursts can be achieved using the tongue. Strong gusts of air can throw the reed out of alignment, so avoid yelling at the melodica.

How to care for a melodica

Learning to play the melodica correctly is only part of getting the sounds right. To make sure you always get the right sounds, take the time to take care of your melodica. For example, it could be something as simple as keeping your melodica in its case when not in use to protect it from dust. Moisture buildup is also not a good thing, so be sure to regularly remove any built-up moisture. To make sure you don’t forget, work on making it a habit to remove excess moisture after every play. Simply press the moisture release button at the bottom and blow into the mouthpiece without pressing down on the piano keys.
