Do you know the man named Mathew Michael “Matt” Murdock? He is the alter ego of the Marvel comic book superhero Daredevil. He has a disability, particularly in his sense of sight. When he was a child, a chemical blinded him. Despite his shortsightedness, he became a lawyer and he was good at it. Yes, he has superpowers to compensate for his visual impairment. His special ability is like a sonar, or that of a bat that uses sound to see objects even in the dark. Perhaps one more real-life example is Reggie Miller, a former All-Star shooting guard for the Indiana Pacers in the NBA (National Basketball Association), who has a habit of taking shots that hit the buzzer. His success story is inspiring, he was born with polio that almost paralyzed him, but he overcame the odds and became an outstanding professional basketball player. Reggie wrote a book called I Love Being the Enemy, but the real enemy of his as a child was polio. In real life a large percentage of people are born with disabilities every day, most would give up when faced with it. However, there are those who would not allow it to get in the way of living a normal life. Some of those who have it were able to pass the test, and are even more successful compared to their normal counterparts. What are these disabilities that could actually reduce one’s confidence to live a normal life?

lose a limb

It is normal for you to think that this could only affect the physical appearance of a human being, but you would be wrong if you think so. In most cases, phantom pain that is mental is more difficult to overcome than losing a limb. It could last for years or even a lifetime if left untreated.

Visual disability

Blindness is practically the most recognized disability in the world. Medical science is finding a way to solve this centuries-old problem. Special schools and facilities are built to help those who cannot see to lead a normal life.

Sound of silence

This is perhaps the most invisible type of disability, and probably also the most unrecognized. Unlike a cripple or a blind person, deafness does not have as many benefits, due to the fact that anyone could post a deaf person just to claim the benefit. Unless he’s mute, which is usually associated with a lack of hearing, people will think he’s normal.

Disability can take many forms. Examples are our fear and anxiety, although they do not belong on the list but they are very capable of crippling one’s value in society. We cannot completely ignore fear because it is normal to feel it from time to time, but having to fear something in the extreme would be in another category. Trust yourself because it is the only constant ally we have to overcome fear.
