When you network for business, are you worried about getting close to strangers? You can welcome and encourage contact by showing that you are open to people. To invite interaction, use these simple networking tools and tips to reap the benefits of networking:

o Make eye contact to show that you are approachable.

o Be the first to offer a warm smile.

o Keep your body language open. Don’t cross your arms over your chest. This sends the signal that you are not accessible

o Stand near the door. That way, you can talk to a lot of people for a short period of time.

o The best person to approach is someone who is alone. You are probably uncomfortable and will appreciate being rescued when you approach.

o Know that people always congregate at the bar or food table. Get up close and personal with those present about the food, decor, and event.

o Remember the old saying: two is company, three is crowd? Two people who are deep in conversation may not want to be interrupted. Find groups of three or more people to get closer to.

o Assume the role of host. Introduce the people you know. Offer to show people where the wardrobe or bathroom is, if they ask. Soon you will be chatting like old friends.

o Keep moving. If you sit or stand in the corner of the room, no one will see you.

o Don’t stay with your friend. If you are coming to the event with a colleague, split up to make new contacts and join later.

o Come in with a positive attitude about meeting new people, and your interest in meeting other people will manifest.

o Whenever possible, eat before the event so you won’t be hungry when you arrive. It’s difficult to strike up a conversation while juggling food and drink, and people will be less likely to approach you. If eating beforehand is not possible, take a few minutes to sit down and eat, then get up and mix.

We invite you to use these tips and tools to connect with people and reap the benefits of business networking.
