In case you didn’t know, there are now over 17 types of Pokémon, with 495 individual species. This is a far cry from the few original ‘capsule monsters’ that Satoshi Tajiri invented less than twenty years ago. Unfortunately for some (some, most players simply embrace the new Pokémon with gleeful enthusiasm), there is no real story or logic behind the proliferation of all these species over the years, but they continue to grow. And the more there is, the more there is to catch and train!

The latest in the Pokémon craze is the Black and White Pokémon which has, of course, spawned new monsters, both the new Black and White Pokémon video games, as well as an entirely new line of Black and White Pokémon cards, Black and White Pokémon plush toys. (plush toys) and Pokemon Zukan Tomy figures. The Pokemon Black and White promo cards were very hot when they came out. In fact, Pokemon Black and White has been the most exciting release the game has seen in a long time.

Type 1s are called “normal” Pokémon, although it is difficult to see what is normal about them. Type 2s are fire Pokémon and, as their name implies, they have a certain ability to make fire. However, most of them are nothing like dragons. Type 3 is the opposite of Type 2: the Water Pokémon. Presumably, a Fire Pokémon will be drenched in battle with one of these, or whoever has the most of each will win. Type 4 are Electric Pokémon. From this group comes the Pokémon mascot, Pikachu. These creatures are capable of generating enormous electrical charges when they need it, that is, in battle or in the hands of an inexperienced trainer. Type 5 are Ice Pokémon, which are really good at slowing down an opponent in battle.

Technically, they should also be able to keep a cold cooler on a road trip to Vermillion City. Type 6 are Grass Pokémon, which generally means that their DNA has interbred with plant life. These leafy remnants generally give Pokémon powers like razors or intoxicating scents. Type 7 are the Pokémon that fight and as the name implies, they excel at punching, kicking, and martial arts. Type 8 are poisonous Pokémon. Don’t let these guys bite, spit, or lick you. Many have poisonous skin or other parts of the body as well.

Type 9 are land Pokémon. They crouch down and launch a fierce upward attack. They are also difficult to pin down. Type 10 are the flying Pokémon. Their advantages are obvious but they are susceptible to attacks from fire, water, and poison. Type 11 are physical Pokémon. They usually know what their opponent’s next move will be. Type 12 are Insect Pokémon. Their weakness in brittleness they make up for in agility. Type 13 are the Rock Pokémon. They are very difficult to defeat and deliver devastating blows. Type 14 is the Ghost Pokémon. If you can’t see them, you can’t hit them. Type 16 are the Dark Pokémon. They are very good at blending in with the background for a sneak attack. Finally, Type 17 are the Steel Pokémon. Like the Rock Pokémon, they are very difficult to defeat and deliver devastating blows.
