Countless people want to work in the fun and profitable occupation of laying the bar. As a bartender, I often had people approach me to find out how they could get a job. They always think it will be fun. While having fun and making a lot of money is a definite possibility, there is much more to work than that. The best thing for everyone would be to know the full story and discover all the nitty-gritty of running a bar. After spending 15 years as a bartender, I had a lot of experiences, some fun and some not at all fun. I could tell stories that would make your hair curl. With that said, there are plenty of tips and tricks to making it a profitable and fun career. Anyone contemplating becoming a bartender must learn what the job is really about.

The not-so-glamorous side of the business is doing things like preparing, cleaning, washing, serving, dealing with waiters, dealing with bad customers, dealing with drunk customers, and much more. There are ways to make the night more peaceful, things that make work easier, how to get out of the woods, and many more things you need to know to enjoy your work. Without those tips, you could end up thinking it’s the worst job in the world. Also, you will need to know about the different types of liquor, spirits, and mixers, and how to increase the sale to increase the check so your tip is higher. You should learn special little things to do that will make your customers happy, which will make them tip more. At first it will be amazing, but it really is possible to learn everything if you just pay attention and want to be a good bartender.

Anyone can mix drinks, but to be a great bartender, you will have to learn to be an actor, a psychologist, do manual jobs, be a comedian, and most of all, please people. You should also learn to entertain during the slow times and little tricks that impress your clients.

I don’t want to blow anyone’s bubble, but I think you deserve to know the whole truth before you hit the job. As you can see here, there is so much more to mixing drinks and flirting with your groupies. There are also a lot of good things, like sometimes the waiters actually have groupies and sometimes you can really make a lot of money. It takes a unique type of person to be a great bartender.
